my puppy wont stop eating my stairs then when he chewed the carpet he eats the wood?

he has toys, bones, his food, and water where he is left when out, he only does it when im out, i leave the radio on for him when out so he can hear people, ive tryed putting lemon juice, pepper, onion juice, vinegar, all where he chews but he seams to like it, on a bit of a budget as i am now replacing the carpet and top of the step so any usefull suggestions!! (dont say anything stupid please, if u havent got a serious answer then dont bother, no time wasters)
i dont want to creat train him i thik it crule and also he wont chew through the electrices cos their aint any where i leave him. stop thinking that i cant look after my dog, im doing my best and i need a bit of advice, thank u to all the people that are putting me down and thinking that they know it all when it comes to something.

My pup used to do simialr things. When we left he would chew everything wood coffee tables, banisters and dinning room chairs ect....We tried using tobasco sauce and that doggie no bite spray that is supposed to deter dogs, nothing seemed to work, the dog actually ate the bottle of no bite spray. After about a year and alot of distress we decided to get another pup so he would have company during the day, all was fine for about a month, then we came home and found the carpets torn up and more bite marks in our furniture. We since changed their dog food to a preium all natural food, and for 6 months have not seen any new bite marks or carpet destroyed. The dogs actually seem much happier now.
We also got rid of all the stuffed dog toys, we were thinking that the fluff from the toy resembled the carpet/furniture and the dogs were getting confused between the too.
My suggestion for the cords is to take away the slack, use tape or wire ties to secure the wires so they don't drape.
I don't believe in crating a dog either, but we do limit where they can go while we are gone though (less doggie proofing is need then), we close all the doors in the house (bathroom bedrooms ect), and they have free roam of the rest of the house.
These things worked for my dogs, I hope it will help yours.
