1 layer of mud on new drywall?

Question:

I am remodeling our house. I have hung all the drywall and have put on the first layer of mud/joint compound and sanded the first layer. It looks and feels pretty smooth with a couple of exceptions. Could I get away with only doing 1 layer of mud on the drywal before I texture? I will be doing an orange peel texture once I get this figured out. What is the worst that could happen if I only did 1 layer? Seems to me that the first layer worked out pretty well and the texture will hide anything I may have missed.

The sanding was incredibly time consuming and incredibly hard to clean up. Also, we are scheduled for carpet on Tuesday and a second layer of mud would put me a day behind. If i can avoid it at all, I would like to.

I should also mention I did not use paper joint tape. I used the fiberglass mesh tape. So, I hung the drywall, stuck the tape on the joints, then applied the first layer of mud.

you should be totally fine since you are doing the orange peel. my mom had this done to her walls (she hired some guys) and I am pretty sure that they only did one layer. I watched them put the mud on and then the next day they were doin the orange peel. you'll be ok just go for it!
